CC Switch Setup for Codex
This guide is not a required next step. If you have not completed the beginner path, start with the AI learning paths.
💡 Who this is for: people who can already open ChatGPT/Codex but need to switch among multiple API URLs, keys, or model configurations. If you only sign in with ChatGPT, you do not need CC Switch.
A third-party configuration switch and real-request reference test was completed in an already-installed Windows 11 environment: CC Switch showed the target configuration as active, Codex showed the same configuration after a restart, and one real request returned normally. OpenAI's official ChatGPT sign-in, a fresh Windows installation, and compatibility across providers are still not fully verified. Do not interpret this result as “every configuration works.”
CC Switch is a third-party open-source configuration manager. It is not an OpenAI product and is not required for Codex. It does not include a ChatGPT plan, API credits, or a way to change OpenAI's regional availability.
1. Quick Route
In short: when official ChatGPT sign-in is available to you, test that path first and keep a route back. If you deliberately use only a third-party API, you may skip official sign-in, but you must understand that the result is not an OpenAI official login.

Most Windows PCs use x64. Choose ARM64 only when Settings > System > About > System type explicitly says ARM64.
Download only from farion1231/cc-switch on GitHub. Avoid unofficial “portable” or “internal” builds, and do not disable antivirus protection just to complete installation. This guide does not endorse API resellers or people selling keys.
4. Install CC Switch
4.1 Windows
- Download the x64 or ARM64
.msithat matches your PC. - Double-click the installer.
- Complete the setup wizard.
- Search for CC Switch in the Start menu and open it.
If security software warns you, verify the URL, version, and publisher. Stop if the source is unclear.
4.2 macOS
- Download and open the
.dmg. - Drag CC Switch into Applications.
- Open it from Launchpad or Applications.
- If macOS blocks it, open System Settings > Privacy & Security, verify the source, and choose Open Anyway.
5. Show Codex
After the first launch, make Codex visible on the home page:
- Open Settings > General.
- Find the main-page application selector.
- Enable OpenAI Codex / Codex.
- Return to the home page and confirm that Codex is available.
If Codex still does not appear, fully quit and reopen CC Switch, then confirm that the setting was saved.
6. Keep Official Sign-in
If you already signed in through ChatGPT and need official plugins or mobile remote features, enable this option under Codex enhancements:
Keep official login when switching to a third party
Recommended beginner settings:
- Keep official login: on, so you can return to the official configuration.
- Unified Codex conversation history: off initially, because providers may handle encrypted content and history formats differently.
Consider unified history only after each configuration works independently and you understand why you need it.
7. Add an API Configuration
Return to the CC Switch home page, select Codex, and add a provider. You will usually need:
- Configuration name: a clear name such as “OpenAI API” or “Test Environment.”
- API URL: the Base URL supplied by the provider.
- API key: a secret generated in the provider dashboard.
- Model names: exact names currently exposed by the provider.
- Additional parameters: only those documented by the provider.
An API key can spend money and access services under your account. Never post it in a group chat, screenshot, article, or Git repository. If exposure is possible, revoke the old key immediately and create a new one.
A third-party API provider may receive your code, file contents, and request logs. Verify the provider's identity, data-retention policy, pricing, and refund rules before use. Prefer an official or enterprise-controlled configuration for sensitive projects.
8. Test and Switch
Do not treat one “enabled successfully” label as sufficient evidence. Verify three layers in order:
Layer 1: CC Switch shows the target configuration as active
→ Layer 2: fully quit and restart Codex, then check the configuration name at the lower left
→ Layer 3: send one low-risk request and receive a normal response
8.1 Confirm the Active Configuration in CC Switch
- After entering the configuration, use CC Switch's connection test or validation feature.
- Activate the configuration only after that check passes.
- Confirm that Codex is selected at the top and the target configuration is marked as active.
This screenshot proves only which configuration CC Switch had selected. It does not prove that Codex had loaded the new configuration or that a real request would succeed.
8.2 Restart Codex and Send a Real Request
- Fully quit the Codex process, then reopen it. Closing only the conversation or creating a new task may leave the old process and configuration in memory.
- Confirm that the configuration name shown at the lower left of Codex matches the one selected in CC Switch.
- Send a simple request that does not read or modify files, for example:
Reply only: Connection test successful. Do not read or modify any file.
- After the simple request returns normally, enter a test workspace and run this read-only request:
Only read the current folder and list its files. Do not modify anything.
- If the request fails, return to OpenAI Official / the official configuration when that configuration is available, then isolate whether the problem is the Codex application, the configuration values, or the service connection.
The screenshots came from an already-installed Windows 11 environment after CC Switch switched Codex to Laifa AI. In this guide, Laifa AI is a third-party API configuration, not OpenAI's official ChatGPT sign-in. One successful response proves only that this specific connection worked at that moment. It does not prove compatibility with other API providers, models, plugins, mobile or remote features, or every Codex capability. This article does not endorse or guarantee any API provider.
Change one variable at a time. Do not replace the account, API URL, key, model, and network simultaneously, or you will not know which change caused the failure.

A ChatGPT Plus subscription does not automatically include OpenAI API credits, and API billing does not automatically provide a ChatGPT subscription.
10. Troubleshooting
10.1 Is CC Switch required for Codex?
No. Use the official application directly when you only sign in with ChatGPT. CC Switch is mainly for managing multiple API configurations.
10.2 Should Windows use x64 or ARM64?
Most Intel and AMD PCs use x64. Download ARM64 only when Windows System type explicitly says ARM64.
10.3 Why is Codex missing from the home page?
Open Settings > General, enable OpenAI Codex in the main-page selector, save, then fully quit and reopen CC Switch.
10.4 The active configuration is not applied
Confirm that Codex is selected on the CC Switch home page and that the target configuration is active. Then fully quit the Codex process, reopen it, check the configuration name at the lower left, and send one simple request that does not read or modify files. Seeing the configuration name alone does not prove a working connection; a real response proves only that this request worked at that moment. If it still fails, return to OpenAI Official when available to separate an application problem from an API configuration problem.
10.5 The connection test fails
Check the API URL, key, exact model name, and account balance. Do not guess model names; use the values shown in the provider's current dashboard and documentation.
10.6 Do Plus users need API credits?
Not for normal ChatGPT sign-in. Separate API costs apply only when you explicitly choose an API workflow.
10.7 Should unified conversation history be enabled?
Leave it off initially. Cross-provider history can fail because of encrypted content or incompatible formats. Verify each provider independently first.
10.8 Why are some desktop features missing?
An API that returns content does not necessarily support official plugins, mobile remote control, account sign-in state, or every Codex desktop feature. Prefer official sign-in for those capabilities and keep a route back to the official configuration.
10.9 Can it solve sign-in problems in unsupported regions?
No. CC Switch is a configuration manager and does not change OpenAI's supported-country list. This guide does not provide VPN, proxy, region-changing, or relay bypass instructions. Follow OpenAI's current availability and account rules.
10.10 How do I uninstall it?
- Switch back to OpenAI Official in CC Switch.
- Windows: open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and uninstall CC Switch.
- Mac: move CC Switch from Applications to Trash.
11. Safety Checklist

- No API key appears in a chat, screenshot, article, or Git repository.

- You understand that third-party API providers may receive code, file contents, and request logs.
- You understand that CC Switch is not an official login or regional-availability solution.
- You know how to return to OpenAI Official.
12. Final Check
Configuration is complete when all five items pass:
- Codex appears on the CC Switch home page.
- The official sign-in retention option matches your needs.
- The new configuration passes its connection test.
- Codex completes a read-only test.
- You can immediately return to OpenAI Official after an error.
🎉 Safest order: when official sign-in is available, verify it and keep a route back; when using only a third-party API, confirm the data and billing boundaries first → install CC Switch → enable Codex → add one configuration → run a low-risk and then read-only test → add the next configuration.
